RED RIVER CANOEING offers a four-hour leisure trip down this historic river. Rent canoes where Highway 41 crosses the Red River in Adams. Open weekends April-Oct.; Daily Memorial Day-Labor Day. (800) 862-8408 or (615) 696-2768.

ROBERTSON COUNTY HISTORY MUSEUM showcases the unique history of Robertson County, including its railroad and whisky past, as well as its still vibrant tobacco industry. The Museum was recently relocated to the wonderfully restored former U.S. Post Office (1915) just off the Court Square in Springfield. Hours: Wed-Fri 10-4, Sat 104. Small admission charged. SPRINGFIELD'S MAIN STREET offers shopping in historic distillery warehouses. The 1879 courthouse is near restored Victorian homes.

BELL WITCH CAVE near Adams is open for tours. Named for the legendary spirit who haunted the John Bell family from 1816 to 1828. The cave is also a site of Native American history. Open 10-5 except Tuesday, weather permitting, May - Oct., weekends only after Labor Day. (615) 696-3055.

HISTORIC CHURCHES

ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH in the Flewellyn community near Cedar Hill, the oldest active Catholic congregation in Tennessee formed in 1842.

MT. ZION UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, the first Methodist Church in the county, founded in 1798.

RED RIVER BAPTIST CHURCH on Church Street was founded in 1791 and is one of the county's oldest churches.

CROSS PLAINS, Robertson County's first settlement (1779). Shop Main Street for antiques, gifts, Victorian garden art and folk art. Visit the 1900s soda fountain and sample our orchards. Call the Cross Plains Visitors Bureau for self-guided tours (615) 654-2256.

RIDGETOP began as an 1800s summer resort and railroad community. The RIDGETOP MUSEUM details this history and is open April-Labor Day, Sat. and Sun. 10-5 and by appt. for tours. (615) 851-6779.

GREENBRIER HISTORICAL SOCIETY operates a museum and library. Open Wed. - Fri 10am - 4pm, Sat. 10am - 4pm. (615) 643-8461
